A special feature of the Chinese language is its frequent use of "set phrases" (chengyu). These set phrases, usually consisting of four Chinese characters, describe a person, situation or event in a pithy and often poetic way.

Most set set phrases originate in early Chinese classics, poetry, prose, Buddhist scriptures and folk sayings.
